He's Smart But His Birds Are Sloppy- Japan Picks an Astonaut

Do you know how Japan picks their astronauts? Well, the top ten finalists, who have been carefully selected, are all put together in an "Isolation Chamber". However, there are only two openings in the Japanese astronaut corps. Inside this "Chamber" these ten candidates are being carefully studied and observed by a panel of psychiatrists, psychologists, and Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) members. But really, they just want to get to know who you are! :)
In this seven day period, not only are they forced to live with each other in this crammed space, being watched every second, but they are also put to tests. The one Mary got to witness was when they made the participants do origami, to show their patience and accuracy under pressure. Each of them have to make 1,000 cranes. Could you even imagine that? Because over 90% of a typical mission on the International Space Station is devoted to assembling, repairing, or maintaining the shuttle itself, it is necessary that the astronauts are not easily frustrated, which could turn into a haphazard performance.
I finally understand the title of the chapter!

  1. I give astronauts a lot of credit, I could never live in a small space with that many other people for weeks or months at a time. Not to mention that you REALLY have to want something badly to make 1000 paper cranes...

  2. Wow!!! This is a crazy test! I don’t think I would be able to be patient enough to build one origami crane let alone 1,000. I give these astronauts a lot of credit!
